SMEDAN has introduced a new desk further to empower women and young people through targeted programmes and accelerate the growth of the MSME sub-sector.
The desk was unveiled by Charles Odii, the director general of SMEDAN, and Uju Kennedy-Ohanenye, the minister of women’s affairs, at the agency’s headquarters in Abuja. The newly established desk will coordinate efforts to democratise access to finance for women, provide tailored training, and ensure proportionate inclusion in all SMEDAN programmes.
According to him, these initiatives focus on increasing women’s access to capital, tools, training, and markets to enhance production quality and competitiveness.
In his words, “Our focus on women is a data-driven decision. They are investment multipliers and constitute the majority of SME owners in the country. Grants provided to women yield economic benefits and enhance living standards, transforming communities and elevating households.”
Kennedy-Ohanenye praised SMEDAN for prioritizing women and pledged to collaborate to equip female entrepreneurs with modern tools to increase profits. After unveiling a desk, the minister inspected SMEDAN’s common facility centre, equipped with industrial sewing machines for women. SMEDAN plans to revamp industrial development centres and hubs nationwide.
