The Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC) and the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN) have joined forces to improve exports for Nigerian SMEs. The collaboration aims to simplify trade facilitation processes and enhance export trade in the country.
During a meeting between the two agencies, Nonye Ayeni, the executive director of NEPC, stressed the importance of strategic cooperation. He also announced the launch of the “Operational Double Your Export” programme, which aims to increase the volume and value of Made-in-Nigeria products.
Ayeni laid out the plan’s focus on the development and promotion of 20 key products with global market potential, aimed at targeting 15 different markets. The goal is to facilitate exports by partnering with companies that can compete on a global scale.
Odii, the DG of SMEDAN, emphasised the crucial role of capacity building in the export business, especially for the 96% of businesses that operate as Small and Medium Entrepreneurs (SMEs). With offices across 36 states, SMEDAN intends to complement NEPC’s efforts by aligning with the One State One Product (OSOP) initiative and proposing a joint capacity-building programme.
Odii also advocated for the reduction of trade barriers, encouraging market access, and urging the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) to provide special funding for SMEs to boost exports within the regional bloc.
