There must be a better way to grow a business than to sacrifice family time.
For many business owners, this may seem impossible because, despite all their best efforts, you just have to feed a growing business.
And one thing a growing business needs is a lot of resources. That is time, money, talent, etc.
However, many people start businesses to provide for their families and spend quality time with them.
Since you started the business to spend more time with your family in the first place, it makes little sense to sacrifice family time for it.
This article illustrates how you can grow your business without sacrificing time with your family as a business owner.
Setting up a documented procedure that outlines how to perform the different tasks necessary for your business to achieve its goals can never be overemphasized.
You can think of a business system as standard operating procedures (SOPs) that everyone in your team has, which enables them to implement key activities with little or no training.
One of the many benefits is that it makes scaling easier since your business relies less on you and requires less of your time for it to operate and grow efficiently.
As your business grows, it would demand more from you and your staff. That means you would have to invest more money, time and skills to fuel its growth.
The result would be less time spent with family and friends since time is limited.
You can avoid this by deliberately creating family time. Carve out time every day from your business schedule to spend with your family.
It is not a time to check your emails or make quick phone calls in the bathroom.
Make sure that the few hours you dedicate to your family are well spent and that you are truly present.
If you don’t disciple yourself, you find that there are a million things you can do every day in your business.
But since it’s not wise to do that, choose to do the few most important things that bring the best results and leave the rest.
According to the 80/20 rule, business owners spend 80% of their time on activities that generate 20% of their revenue.
If you prioritize the tasks that yield 80% of the results, you will instantly save more time for your family and your business will grow without being negatively affected.
Now, outline all your business activities, determine the 20% that are bringing in the most revenue and focus on them.
If you want to successfully grow your business without sacrificing family time, one thing you have to do is let your staff lead the business.
But before you do, train them to operate your business successfully, even in your absence.
The first step is to ensure that you are hiring the right people to fill the proper roles.
Next, you align their personal goals to that of the business, so they can take ownership of their future by putting in their best efforts to grow the business and reach their goals.
Then, you provide them with the tools they need to succeed.
It includes a healthy working environment, training, more opportunities, your trust, etc.
And when you finally can, make them fill like joint owners of the business, give them room to make decisions, make mistakes and essentially grow.
You are still in charge and can direct the growth as you see fit, but much of the time-consuming activities are handled by your competent staff.
