If your small business must achieve the goals it has set for this year, you must ensure that your employees do better than they did last year.
But it does not just happen by you asking them to do better. It takes a strategic effort to improve employee performance and one that no business owner should take lightly.
Here are 4 such strategies you can use to help your employees perform better:
Its often the case that when you ask employers to give employees incentives to perform better, the first point of call is increasing salary.
But as important as money may be to an individual there are many other factors that are equally effective to improve performance.
One of the best ways to create an environment that encourage them to offer their best.
When you create an environment that recognizes hard work and praises/rewards it, it spurs them to do more.
When you create a culture of genuine care for their wellbeing & thoughts, by allowing for personal time offs, giving them room for errors or allowing them to share their honest feedback it shows you want them to succeed and respect their inputs.
Involving them in the decision-making process or their personal goal setting gives them a sense of autonomy and belonging in the business.
Every business owner must realise that their ability to communicate is the key to improved employee performance.
Think of it this way, the more clearly you make the roles, expected results, of your employees the easier it is for them to do better at it.
As much as you may want to use corporate jargon or vague words when you speak, you can do better by being as specific and clear as you can especially since you don’t want to leave any room for confusion.
Are your team members aware of what their goals and expectations are? Do they know when you expect goals to be met? How do you know?
If possible, try to streamline the tasks per employee. By creating a priority list of the tasks and cutting out the unnecessary ones so they are focused on a larger goal.
Consistently evaluate their routine to ensure that they are doing spending a good chunk of their time performing small, repeatable and insignificant tasks that can be automated, delegated or postponed to create give more time to focus on key priority activities.
Turn your employees into high performers by empowering them with the right knowledge and skills.
Beyond the annual seminars and training, you must expose them to opportunities that help accelerate their development and encourage them to try new things and look for ways to do their jobs better.
But not every employee can become a high performer, so recognizing where your business is lacking ensure that you recruit high performers to fill such roles.
Develop a career plan for each employee that aligns with their personal goals and help them see how they could move up in the business.
